Another big performance from Bermuda’s Tyler Butterfield saw him claim the win in yesterday’s [Jan.15] 2012 La Paz PATCO Triathlon Pan American Elite Men Championship in Argentina. Butterfield topped an international field of competitors from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, United States, Argentina, Costa Rica, Guam, Columbia, Panama, Barbados and more to win the title. He overcame a 46-second deficit out of the swim, broke away to a minute lead on the bike and then held fast against a blazing run by Canada’s Brent McMahon to take top honors in Argentina. Butterfield’s 19:43 swim was 46-48 seconds slower than Canada’s Brent McMahon and Brian Lamar of the USA, an average of 30 seconds slower than a large pack that included Canada’s Kyle Jones, Jason Wilson of Barbardos, Ben Collins of the USA and Crisanto Grajales of Mexico. Butterfield then slashed through the field with a race-best 57:52 bike that was between 90 seconds and 2 minutes faster than his toughest competitors. After a slower-than-average 37 seconds T2 transition, Butterfield had a 1:08 advantage on the closest of the chase group – and 1:16 on McMahon, the most dangerous runner in the field. Butterfield kept a lid on the race with a 5th-best 34:52 10k run which surrendered just 44 seconds to McMahon. When Butterfield hit the finish tape, his 1:53:36 time was 31 seconds better than runner-up McMahon and 54 seconds better than third place Kyle Jones of Canada. Bermuda’s Flora Duffy was also in the field, and finished a strong 12th in the Women’s Elite Race. Duffy recorded an overall time of 2:13:35, she completed the Swim Course in 19:37, she then finished the 1:06:25 and then completed the Run Course clocking 45:23. |

An announcement from the International Triathlon Union:
The International Triathlon Union (ITU) is delighted to announce that the Triathlon Mixed Relay has been officially included on the Commonwealth Games programme starting in 2018. Today in St. Kitts & Nevis, the 70 member Commonwealth Games Associations present voted in favour of including the Mixed Relay event at the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly. The discipline may also be considered by the Organising Committee for the Glasgow 2014 Games.
Today's inclusion into the Commonwealth Games is a great boost for the development of the sport across the 71 Commonwealth nations around the globe. Earlier this year, the format was also accepted onto the programme of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
ITU will next present to the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee in hopes of having the Triathlon Mixed Relay as an optional addition to the sports programme of Glasgow 2014, the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games.
The recent successes strengthen ITU's quest to get the Triathlon Mixed Relay event into the Olympic Games beginning with Rio 2016. The ITU is bidding to get the discipline added to the programme of the Olympic Games and will submit its official bid early next year to the IOC. International Triathlon Union |

Message from BASA:
Good day Masters swimmers,
I know that many of you have goals for this year to compete in triathlons, open water swims, overseas swim meets or just want to train harder. I am pleased to let you know that we will begin to have coached training sessions at lunchtime again. There will be a coached session on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12-1pm. These sessions will be approximately 3,000 meters and will consist of drills, kicking, pulling, sprinting and hopefully a good time. I will start these sessions this Monday 31st (Halloween). I look forward to working with you all.
For those of you that wanted to sign up for the Saturday swim sessions they will be starting shortly. There will be 4 Saturday sessions available until Christmas due to the pool being previously booked.
November 19th and 26th. December 10th and 17th. The sessions will be from 8-9:30am and will be intensive. The cost of the sessions is $15 and with the amount of interest that we received from our flyer I think this will be an exciting group and I am looking forward to getting it started.
We have had some discussions about having a Masters only meet in early December and hope to have you information shortly. More of an adult event with cool refreshments and Barbeque at the end. If you are interested in doing this kind of meet or would like to help with the organizing please contact the office.
Hope to hear from you and see you all soon.
Regards
Ben Smith

Dave Morrison writes:
"In case you are wondering, there will be another triathlon camp run by Mike Neill and Jasper Blake and hopefully Jen MaClean (or an alternative as Jen is pregnant and MAY not be able to fly).At the moment the proposed dates are the last week in January 2012 but dates and details are to be finalized. There might well be a number of triathletes from Victoria BC participating in the camp.
It is anticipated that the camp will be similar in content to last year but designed to accommodate not just long distance triathletes but also Olympic distances triathletes.
I am just putting you on notice so you can plan ahead if you want to attend. We should have full details out in the nest 2/3 weeks. We anticipate that the cost will remain at $250 or thereabouts + $20 more if you attend the final party which was a huge success last year.
If you would like to help with the organization in any way let me know at dm@uptonmanagement.com
Jasper will be bringing his wife and two young kids so I will be looking to find some kind of apartment or separate cottage as a free homestay for them so if you can help out or know of someone who might be able to help out then please let me know.
I will also need a really sweet hotel / guest cottage deal for the visiting athletes (depending on numbers) so if you have connections who can do a good deal then please let me know.
Best
Dave Morrison" |
